Situated in the heart of Charing—a place of historical importance in the upper Assam district of Sivasagar, Swahid Maniram Dewan College was established in 1964. The college was so named to perpetuate the memory of the great martyr Maniram Dewan who sacrificed his life in the hands of the British ruler in his pursuit to free his motherland way back in 1958. A native of Charing, Maniram Dewan also had the distinction of being the first Tea Planter of the country. Affiliated to Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh, the college is now a full-grown single streamed Arts College under a provincialized system of the Govt. of Assam and imparts under-graduate education in as many as nine different subjects offering the major course in most of the subjects introduced in the college. Moreover, the college offers two-year Higher Secondary Course under Assam Higher Secondary Education Council. In the recent years, the college is paying its full attention for providing quality education to its students through well-trained faculties. Consistently good academic results are a regular feature of the college.
Located in the midst of the rural surroundings on a sprawling area of 65-odd bighas of land, the college is only about 4 km. South of the famous Namdang Stone Bridge Gourisagar Dole along the historic Naga Ali and about 2 km East of NH-37.
From The Desk of Principal….
Having historical significance, Charing is the birthplace of many eminent personalities. As a result of the efforts of the educated persons and knowledge seekers of Charing, the college was established a long way back in 1964. Previously known as Charing College. It is one of the few old colleges of Upper Assam. Later on ‘Charing College’ was re-christened as ‘SwahidManiram Dewan College, Charing’ (S.M.D. College) which got named after the greatest martyr Maniram Dewan.
Keeping in mind the elevated values and esteemed culture of Charing, the college imparts quality education to the large possible extent. The College surrounds the area of economically challenged and socially deprived people. Situated at a distance of nearly 2.5 km from NH-37 and 5kms from historical Namdang Stone Bridge, the college is locked by frequent communication. Most of the students of the greater Charing area belongs to an agrarian society who are financially not sound. The College offers the best education under the guidance of qualified intellectual and educationally brilliant teachers. With generous aid from UGC, the college had developed vast infrastructure to the best of possible extent. Recently, in January 2015, the College celebrated its Golden Jubilee.
I, on behalf of the college fraternity, would like to welcome all the knowledge seekers to our college with warm feelings from my heart.
I invite all of them to build up their academic career under the guidance of the well-experienced teachers of the college who are very friendly.
I wish all the success of the college in every aspect.
